In conversation with: Georgia Denton

From Account Handler to PI Assistant Director, Georgia Denton reflects on a decade at Miles Smith, the evolving Professional Indemnity (PI) market, and why effective placements always start with a conversation.

A decade at Miles Smith – and counting

When Georgia joined Miles Smith ten years ago, she began as an Account Handler. Having taken a two-year break from insurance, including time in Australia and working outside the industry, she was eager to get her career back on track.

“I wanted to be a PI Broker, so finding a role without the usual limitations like ‘you won’t be out broking’ felt like the perfect opportunity” she recalls.

Growing into leadership

Starting out by handling a high volume of renewals and new business cases, Georgia used the role to refresh her knowledge and rebuild her confidence. Over time, her responsibilities evolved. She began managing more complex cases, supporting new starters through training, and contributing to reporting and wider management tasks.

“I’ve had the opportunity to grow my technical knowledge and leadership skills gradually” she explains. Now, in her new role as PI Assistant Director, she’s excited to support others in their development too, by utilising an approachable and supportive management style.

Why PI? It’s all in the detail

What initially drew Georgia to PI, and what continues to motivate her, is the complexity the field offers.

“In Design and Construct (D&C) PI especially, there’s so much detail and variation. You can’t just tick boxes” she says. “You need to listen carefully to what the client does and doesn’t do and translate that into meaningful cover. That challenge is what I really enjoy.”

Exclusive wordings, shaped by experience

Georgia is particularly proud of the exclusive D&C wordings the team at Miles Smith has developed, two Civil Liability-based wordings that offer broader protection than the negligence wordings commonly found in the market. One includes a write-back for fire safety cover, an important feature for some D&C risks.

“These wordings have been shaped by real client needs, covering things like mitigation costs, loss of documents, warranty reviews, and dishonest acts” she adds. “It’s a huge team effort and something I feel quite proud of.”

That sense of pride extends to the wider team too: “I’m proud of our growth over the last ten years and the strong relationships we’ve built with brokers. I’ve worked with some of the same brokers for years, and the fact they trust me with their clients’ business means a lot.”

A market that keeps moving

The PI market is constantly evolving, whether it’s shifts in insurer appetite, rate movements, or changes in underwriting approaches. Georgia highlights that the current soft market has brought sharp swings in premium, which is good news for clients, but also brings new challenges.

“In this kind of market, it’s more important than ever to focus on quality of cover and strong, long-term insurer relationships” she says. She encourages brokers to be open about their targets: “If we know what you’re aiming for, we can place the business more effectively and sometimes spot things that might otherwise be missed.”

Advice for up-and-coming talent

Looking back, Georgia says she would tell her younger self: “Back yourself more, you know more than you think you do. And don’t limit yourself to a narrow path.”

She once believed a management or leadership role was not for her, but staying open to new opportunities led Georgia somewhere far more rewarding. Her advice to others? “Stay curious, ask questions, and build strong relationships, both internally and externally. And always be willing to learn, because the market doesn’t stand still.”

Outside the office

Outside of work, Georgia enjoys spending quality time with family and friends. She also loves getting out for long walks with her partner and their dogs or simply unwinding with a good TV series.

She’s also got a competitive side, having earned her black belt in kickboxing and taken part in Hyrox – a testament to her focus and drive both in and out of the office.

“It’s a nice balance” she says.
