A complex engineering PI risk

DIFFICULT. DONE WELL.

We pride ourselves in providing solutions where others cannot and doing difficult things well. But what does this mean day-to-day at Miles Smith?

The Risk

We were approached by one of our Broker Partners who were attacking a complex submission for a well-established engineering firm. They were running out of options and there were several factors causing the Broker Partner to struggle with the risk placement:

  • Process engineering (potential for large consequential loss)
  • Critical engineering services for the energy/power sector (a notoriously difficult area declined by many insurers)
  • Work in the pharmaceutical sector (bodily injury and consequential loss exposure)
  • Safety critical engineering for the rail sector (for all of the above reasons)
  • Finally, the Market had been approached by a different broker resulting in several key markets already being closed off to the risk

The Approach

We worked closely with the broker to establish which markets had already been closed off. Before approaching the remaining relevant markets, we asked the Broker Partner to explore several more questions with the insured to make sure we understood their exposure. As expected, this revealed a much better risk than the proposal forms initially suggested. We then spoke to a small number of very specific underwriters.

The Result

Our specialists used their market expertise to place the risk with a very well-known insurer, one who most would not expect to write this business. The policy included cover for both consequential loss and bodily injury and the premium was circa £10k cheaper than the holding market, with a lower excess than expiry. The Broker Partner was so impressed with our approach to the risk, they have now trusted us to broke their own PI insurance for them.
